  • Shapton sharpening stones combine extremely fast cutting action with low maintenance. The Shapton line of glass water-stones has been carefully manufactured to achieve the highest levels of performance and durability. They may appear thin at first glance but they will outlast most other stones that are three times the thickness. These abrasives are extremely uniform. Consistency is the primary goal for Shapton's engineers. The abrasive that you encounter with the first pass will be the same on the 5,000th pass. And this will be true for every abrasive size.
As with every water-stone, Shapton glass stones require lapping (flattening) to maintain the sharpening surface in proper shape.
They do not need to be soaked in water; simply splash some on and start sharpening.
As with all water hones Shapton water-stones do wear concave with use and require periodic re-flattening.

2000 grit / 7.35 micron - Ideal for removing micro-chips, small dents and more metal from an old blade. Excellent stone for perfecting the bevel (the first phase of the honing process).

    Dimensions: 2.75" x 8.25" (210 mm x 70 mm)
    Made in Japan

Shapton Glass Sharpening Stone, 2000 Grit

I like this stone. It puts on a nice edge, but not to the point where its really nice. Good for most folks, but people looking for serious sharpness need to go to 4000. Wear on the 2000 is very low. I put 12 knives through it just after bought it, and it shows zero sign of wear.

Setting of the bevel is the foundation of achieving a successful sharpened razor. Many people start with the 1000 and then progress to the 4000,8000,16000. But I prefer the 2000, 4000, 8000, 16000, 30,000 route. The 1000 will create your bevel slightly faster but at the cost of creating scratches twice as deep as the 2000. When you get up to the polishing phase of the sharpening the deeper scratches, of the 1000, can lead to edge chipping more readily. In short the Shapton’s are a great sharpening system and the core of that system , at least for me, is the 2000. [Note:] I do have the 1000 but only engage when edge repairs are required. Even then I still progress to the 2000 prior to moving to 4000 etc.
