I chuckle a bit when folks write reviews and have next to no experience with using a product. This was my first DE and after 3 months of using it with a variety of blades, I'd conclude that the desired outcome, which is a close smooth shave with no drama, is more about technique and blades than the razor itself. So let's not talk about how close a "razor" shaves, but rather how easy is it to acquire the right technique by how it fits the hand and how well it can be maneuvered over tight spots. This razor works really well on both counts and I would not hesitate to recommend it whether you have small or large hands, new or experienced with this kind of shaving. I have large hands and read the reviews about 'wish it was longer' but they don't specifically say why. That was my only concern when I purchased it, but I can say you just figure it out and end up out of necessity using it in a way that is comfortable for you, feels right and gets you the results you want...you really don't think about it again unless you are obsessed with spending more money on this 'hobby' or feel the need to swap and sell and get into that whole time waster.. not for me. I'm good with this razor and am keeping it as long as I'm, or it is around. It's not the cheapest or the most expensive but it is easy to figre out and works well. Gladly, this is a case where the positive feedback I read prior to buying ended up being substantiated in my experience. It's a tool that does the job as advertised.
After shaving on day one with the Sledgehammer and a Astra blade, I tried this one also with a Astra Platinum Coated blade and it wasn’t nearly aggressive enough. Perhaps I will try it again with a feather blade. Shaving two days in a row with the sledge even with the Astra causes too many nicks on the face. I was told by a coworker that this one would be more gently, which it is, but to a point of being too gentle.
This is one of, if not the best safety razor on the market right now. If you don't own one you should definitely consider getting one. All around great razor that gives an awesome shave everytime. I'm considering buying one with the gold plating, because I like this razor so much. I have a good selection of razors to choose from, both vintage and modern. And I find myself reaching for my 34c most days. I do consider it my daily driver, and if I had to choose just one razor to take with me it would be my 34c hands down, definitely a five star razor. Would recommend this product to anyone who is thinking about taking up wet shaving.
Every aspect of this razor is perfect. The machining is flawless. The weight is nice and gives a solid feel. This handle should last a lifetime or longer.
I ordered the Merkur 34C HD and since using it I now actually look forward to shaving. I use Feather blades and a Fendrihan Medium Super Badger Shaving Brush. I found a great shaving cream on the Fendrihan site: Elvado Royal Tahitian Lime shaving cream, an all-natural product that lathers well and smells fantastic. After shaving I splash on Thayers Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera. Since switching to this system (Merkur 34C HD + badger brush + Feather + Elvado + Witch Hazel with Aloe) the ingrown hairs on my neck have almost completely disappeared. I do just one pass on my neck, with the grain. Super happy. Thanks to Fendrihan for the best products and service on the internet.
