Let me start by saying I am a head shaver, so this review might not be applicable to everyone. This is a very solid razor with a lot of heft, actually I was not expecting it to be as heavy as it is. For a larger man like myself, this is a good thing as many razors feel light and small in my hand. All three pieces are constructed well and fit together perfectly. The blade site securely and is perfectly aligned with both the base and the head. The form, fit, and finish are all of excellent quality and I get the feeling this razor will long outlive me. The knurling on the handle is deep and rugged providing perfect grip even with soapy hands, so no need to worry about this razor slipping. Another reviewer stated that the blades did not align... On the razor I received, though both blades align parallel with the head and the base, on one side of the razor the blade does stick out slightly more, (ever so slightly), than the other. If this is a design error it is working well in my favour as it is providing two slightly different levels of aggressiveness, which to me is a very good thing. First pass slightly more aggressive, second pass is nice an mild. With the weight, one has to be careful shaving the top of the head, or anywhere there is not much 'meat'. As such I am using less sharp blades, (Wilkinson and Astra) instead of a Feather to offset the weight of the razor, so far these are working well. In general, this is not a very aggressive razor at all, making it a great choice for head shaving. It might be a little mild for this with this facial stubble though, sorry, can't comment on that. Aggressiveness: 2.5/10 Build quality: 9.5/10 Value for the price: 10/10 As a side note, ordering was simple, email communication was excellent, packaging was perfect, and the order was delivered super fast. Well done Fendrihan team. I would recommend both the product and the company to anyone.
Handle is beautiful but the head casting looks sloppy and shaves more aggressively than Fendrihan’s original MK which I didn’t think was possible. I love the weight of this razor and the feel of the handle is gorgeous in my hand.
I like the weight and feel of the razor. It seems like the quality of the materials is outstanding. Aggressivity is mild to medium in my opinion. Where I think there's a major issue about this razor is the fact that blade alignment is not even on both sides and by a lot. I have to wiggle the head and kinda tilt it a little bit as I screw the handle in to have a decent alignment which is nonetheless wrong. Maybe I got a faulty razor. I don't know. Had high expectation for this razor but it fell flat.
Got the Scientist MKII after Black Friday. The package is very simple, a small box, not the fancy box shown in the pictures. I could take out a star for that but the razor is more important than the box. I think that the built quality is very good, especially when we remember that it is a full SS razor and the price. The finish is good, not super shiny like a chrome DE razor bot good. As it is mentioned in other reviews and forums, the least "attractive" side is the inside of the top piece. That is were we can see that the manufacturing process is not something high end like in a 200$ Feather. Around 6 years ago I came back to wet shaving and I got from Fendrihan an Edwin Jagger DE89 Classic, which has served me well and is still in perfect shape. The fact that the DE89 has a clean handle, which can be slippery at times, and I always wanted a SS razor had determined me to get the MKII. The general feeling of the MKII is good, a bit heavier and longer than the DE89. Together with the machined pattern on the handle gives me a better and easier control on the shave. The blade is held very well in place, does not have any kind of movement. The screw is a lot longer than the DE89, but I guess it was called by the length and weight of the handle. In forums few people had mentioned that the bottom top piece is not plane, when they put it on a flat surface it is rocking. I did that test and mine is OK. One observation regarding this piece is the the corner are at 90 degrees and in some angles a corner can push on the skin and feels a bit too pointy. For the test I used a brand new yellow Feather blade and a Renegade Atelier Lavender Lemonade Shaving Soap and I could not be any happier with the result. I do think that it is a razor to have and use every day, and it has become my preferred razor for the moment.
