As a previous owner of an Edwin Jagger safety razor, I knew full well that I wouldn't go wrong reordering a 2nd for use when I travelling.
This DE89 lives up to all the hype of it being a great entry level razor. I have 4 razors now and this Barley handled DE89 is by far the nicest. Don't wait, get one now.
I bought this item for my fiancé for Christmas. It came neatly packaged with quick shipping. Upon unveiling, the beautiful chrome and barley handle, I could see the joy and excitement in his eyes. *Update* After a month of trying different blades (feather, derby and astra) he has enjoyed many great shaves paired with his EJ silver tip badger brush. This razor is beautifully constructed with a quality chrome finish and is perfect for anyone interested in entering the world of wet shaving.
This is my first DE razor, so I have nothing to compare to but I'm 100% satisfied with the weight, the perfect look and the quality. Maybe six shave done now and It only goes better.
I'm primarily a straight razor fellow but I wanted an option for those days when I might not have as much time; moreover, it's nice to change things about every now and then. I don't have an overly course beard but enough growth that I choose to shave daily. This was one of my first forays into the realm of the DE razor and I am impressed - easily as close and as comfortable as a straight razor and no less enjoyable with respect to my daily routine (which I look forward to, by the way). The fit and finish of this razor is second to none and the weight and balance is perfect (in my view). I rarely let the handle get wet so slip is no issue to me. I also bought the Merkur 38C at the same time but I find that I prefer the shorter handle and slightly lighter weight of the EJ. Both are equal in terms of comfort and closeness though I would reach for this one if given the choice. My only critique would be the three-piece design. I prefer to remove the blade, clean and dry the razor following every use; accordingly, I much prefer the “two-piece” design of the Merkur where one need not grasp the head (containing the blade); only the handle and twist the bottom. That being said, however, I do understand this would require a hollow handle that might introduce water into the system, and the EJ has a wonderful solid handle. Notwithstanding; that (very) minor critique is still not enough to reduce my rating for this razor from anything less than 5-stars.
