Advice

Whether you’re a veteran wet shaver or just starting out, we’ve put together a bit of advice to help wet shavers in their quest for the perfect shave.

SHAVING

Wet shaving is an art and should not be rushed. Following all the essential steps ensures you get the most out of your shave and minimizes the risk of irritation.

Wet Shaving

Whether using a safety razor or a straight razor, every wet shaver should follow certain shaving guidelines for a more effective shave.

Preparing your face with a pre-shave routine will soften hair and skin, making it easier for the blade to glide and cut hair. It’s also a good idea to map out the direction of hair growth; with the grain, against the grain across the grain.

Once the pre-shave process is complete, lather your soap and apply it to the areas you wish to shave.

Shaving Brushes

The shaving brush is a pivotal element of wet-shaving, lending to a rich lather and gentle exfoliation. Shaving brushes can be filled with different grades of natural hair (silvertip, super badger, best badger and pure badger) or synthetic materials with a variety of natural and artificial handles. Silvertip are known to be the highest quality, however other grades and materials can be just as effective.

Finding the best shaving brush for your skin really depends on personal preference; natural or synthetic, loft size, handle style and colour, etc. You want to ensure you’re choosing something you’re comfortable with and that will last over time.

Caring for your brush is important for the brush’s performance and longevity. A brush should be washed prior to its first use, as well as rinsed after each use, and left to dry either on a stand or on a countertop.

Straight Razors

Straight razors, also known as cutthroat razors, have a fixed blade that require continual maintenance and sharpening. Straight razors differ according to a number of variables, including grinding method, blade width, and point type. Educating yourself about the types of straight razors assists you in making the best choice for your needs and skill.

The most important concept to keep in mind is that shaving with a straight razor is a skill that is learned over time; give yourself permission to move at your own pace through your own straight-razor learning curve. Your first few forays into using a straight razor may leave you a little nicked or unevenly shaven, but if you relax and allow yourself time to grow comfortable with the process, soon you will fall into a shaving style and rhythm that is all your own.

How to Use a Straight Razor, Part II

Straight razors require a certain level of skill to sharpen, hone and maintain, and a measure of care and attention when shaving with them. Before starting your wet shaving journey, make sure you’re well-equipped with all the right tools.

Except for a short period of time I have always been a wet shaver and I shave every day (Basic Training does that). My current razors are a Merkur 34C HD and a Rockwell 6S. My current razors are a Merkur 34C HD and a Rockwell 6S. After seeing a few video reviews of the Henson, I just had to give it a try. What a surprise! With a good pre-shave (Proraso Red), soap (TBS Sandalwood) and a Feather blade this razor gave me a very close and a very comfortable shave with just two passes. The lightness of the razor took a little time to get used to but the results were amazing. I bought the "medium" because the blade gap was very close to my Merkur and the 6S with the "5" plate. I would recommend this razor to every "wet shaver", beginner or experienced. Being Canadian made is a plus too.

This razor is really great. It feels substantial in my hands. The knurling is very grippy. The balance is sensational. I used a Voskhod blade in it and got an amazing shave. For $15 you just cannot go wrong!

I've had one for three years and I love it. The shave is close, safe, and easy on the skin. This is my first safety razor and I like that I don't have to buy overpriced cartridges. The tightness after a new blade is put in must be snug... don't overdo it, but hand tight snug. If it's not tight,...I've had one for three years and I love it. 'Rose' is my favourite GFT soap. I get a great lather (not merely foam) by working it with my 25+ year old Simpson Special badger brush. My Mühle stainless blades just sail across the silk surface. And since I suffer from dry skin, I find the Rose soap seems to prevent dryness. No issues at all. I...'Rose' is my favourite GFT soap. I have to say, I have used the GFT Sandalwood and their Almond soap in the recent past as well, they all have their attributes, but Rose just seems work best for me. I love the fact that during the day, just out of the blue I can detect a light trace of rose scent for a moment or two. How elegant is that?
