I added this razor to my collection to be used in my travel case. The blue color is bright and cool and what drew me to this razor. This was inexpensive and i thought it performed well. The shave was not quite as close as my Muhle gets but close. The head has a nice weight to it that i prefer. The handle was not as slippery as i would have expected when wet so well done there. The finish on the head was ok, to be expected from an inexpensive razor. All in all its performance was strong and easily worth more than its cost.
So I get this new cool looking razor in the mail, and I'm getting ready to load a blade and I notice all of the crome is flaking off of the base plate and exposing the brass underneath. Needless to say I was quite disappointed. I don't know if this is just dud, or just a cheap product, but I will be sending it back.
For most of us shaving can be a chore, a task that must be completed, daily or every second day etc. The market place is full of expensive shaving options, electric, big branded cartridges systems, DE razor and straight razors. Most of us grew up and into the various multi-blade cartridge systems. We felt we had to accept the rising costs of these systems and their blade cartridges. It got to a point of near anger for me a few years ago. With that I found Fendrihan and DE shaving. Though I still had some muli-blade systems as they are good for quick and get to it shaving, I found going DE was a more ritualistic and even enjoyable solution. Blades are a fraction of the costs. DE handles though can be pricey but you do get good value for these handle choices. Today I have three DE handles in my kit. I don't need three but wanted more than just one as again when I'm into it, my DE shaving is more a ritual and pleasure than it is a chore. I have a Schick Quattro with a bundle of cartridges for getting down to the job of shaving. I just bought from Fendrihan a Parker Heavy Weight handle or ATRA cartrdges as a cheaper cartridge setup and for when I need to just get to a shave. I reviewed it elsewhere here. But this review is for my newly added Colonel Conk Classic Double Edge razor. It adds to my Weishi Classic Double Edge razor and m recently added Merkur Futur Adjustable Double Edge razor. Quite simply I first chose the Colonel Conk for its blue handle as blue is my favourite colour and that it's a good price here at Fendrihan. How good of a razor it is, well I waited until I had one to use. My Weishi is an easy DE razor, a good starter razor or one for guys with sensitive skin and not too coarse beards. It's easy to use with its butterfly opening. It's very gentle and requires three quality passes to get a good DE shave even on my sensitive skin and rather easy to shave beard hair. The Mekur Futur which I reviewed here is an adjustable razor but even at setting 1, its most sensitive, it's more aggressive than the Weishi. It's a super quality razor but requires deft and more care in using. But will give I say any user regardless of beard coarseness and such a good shave. But for a newbie it may not be your best choice for a first DE razor. I have sensitive skin and at setting 1 I am still getting a hang of it, but is a quality razor and a nice addition to my kit. But what about the Conk? Well it's built well, hefty and IMO attractive. The handle falls in hand nicely and is not too slippery even when wet but it is not as tight in hand as it has no knurling, but its plating makes it still good to operate. Taking it apart to fit an blade was easy. I placed an Astra Platinum in it as Astra's for me are easy blades to use, sharp but not to sharp. Shaving my two day growth using at my disposal Williams shave soap and proper lathering was an out of the moment hit. From the first strokes this razor was great. Safely cutting my beard hair and no cuts or nicks. The weight was great in hand and I found it shaved as safely as the Weishi but cut as good as my Futur on setting 1. It was a joy to use and a no brainer for DE shaving ease. I simply was amazed at how easy it was for me to use. Gentle but a darn good cutter. It is a razor I feel a newbie or a guy with sensitive skin can use daily and it's selling for such a fair price. I love the blue colour of my choice, it is available in red and black too. I feel for me it will be my go to DE razor. Yes, my gold plated Merkur Futur is a classy handle and will offer me most versatility if I use its different settings but the Conk is easier to use and a closer shave than the Weishi. The Weshi is a use without much thinking DE razor as it's mild so it's good for less coarse hair. But The Colonel Conk blows me away for how good it is right out of the box with my first shave. A real winner for me, much recommended.
I bought this as a gift but I used it first to see how it works. The weight is dead on which means you are not tempted to press too hard. I really like the shape of the handle as well as the loading action. It gives a nice shave.
